Congonhas has one advantage that nothing else in São Paulo matches for fixed-wing aircraft: location. For a chief executive with a morning meeting in the financial district and an afternoon in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte or Brasília, it turns the airport part of the day into something close to a formality.

• Time saved on the ground. São Paulo traffic is notorious. An airport inside the city cuts the unpredictable part of the journey rather than the flight itself.
• Domestic reach. Brazil is a very large country, and much of its business travel is internal. Congonhas is set up as a domestic airport, and the short sectors to Rio, Brasília, Curitiba and the interior of São Paulo state are exactly what light and midsize jets do well.
• A recognised executive airport. Aena Brasil, the airport's operator, describes Congonhas as receiving the largest number of executives in the country, and a separate, shorter runway is used for executive and general aviation.

The trade-off is that Congonhas is a busy, constrained airport in a dense city. It has strict hours, short runways by international standards and limited room to grow. That makes it excellent for some trips and wrong for others.

Congonhas at a glance: runways, hours and the operator

Congonhas opened in the 1930s and is one of Brazil's busiest airports by passenger numbers, even though it handles domestic flights only on the airline side. Since 2023 it has been operated by Aena Brasil, part of the Spanish airport group, under a federal concession. Aena has announced a large modernisation programme that runs into 2028, so expect works, changes to terminal areas and occasional operational notices while that continues.

Two runways, one of them for executive aviation

According to Aena Brasil's airport characteristics page, Congonhas has two parallel runways: a main runway of roughly 1,940 metres used mostly by the airlines, and a secondary runway of about 1,435 metres used for executive and general aviation. Neither is long by the standard of international hubs. That matters for aircraft choice, because the operator's performance calculation for a given jet, weight, temperature and runway condition decides whether a flight can use Congonhas at all, and with what fuel and passenger load.

In practice, light jets, midsize jets and turboprops are the everyday business aircraft here. Larger jets may be possible in some conditions, but a heavy long-range jet fully fuelled for a long sector is usually better placed at Guarulhos.

Operating hours: 06:00 to 23:00

Congonhas is closed to scheduled airline flights and general aviation between 23:00 and 06:00, local time. The rule exists because the airport sits among homes, and it is one of the most closely watched operating limits in Brazilian aviation. In September 2026, ANAC published a rule that allows flights already under way to be completed after 23:00 in exceptional situations. ANAC was clear that this does not extend the airport's hours, does not allow new flights to be scheduled late and does not create slots in the night period.

For a private flight, the practical lesson is simple: plan to be airborne comfortably before the cut-off, and treat the late evening as a risk window. A departure delayed by weather, a late passenger or a slot issue can run into the closure, and then the aircraft either repositions to another airport or waits for the morning. Medical, organ-transport and search-and-rescue flights are handled under separate exceptions.

Slots and busy periods

Congonhas is a coordinated airport with heavy airline demand, especially at the morning and early-evening peaks on the São Paulo–Rio shuttle. Business aviation movements have to fit around that. Expect the operator or handler to request a slot for the flight, and expect the most popular times to be the hardest to secure at short notice. If your schedule can move by an hour, say so when you ask for a quote.

International flights and customs

This is the most important thing to understand about a private jet from Congonhas: the airport is built around domestic traffic. Airline international services moved to Guarulhos decades ago, and Congonhas does not operate as a routine international port of entry in the way Guarulhos or Viracopos do. Customs, immigration and health checks for international arrivals are normally carried out at a designated international airport.

What that means for your trip:

• Arriving from abroad. A business jet flying in from New York, Miami, Europe or elsewhere in South America will normally land first at an airport with international clearance, most often Guarulhos. From there, passengers either continue by car or helicopter, or the aircraft repositions on a short domestic sector if the operator can arrange it.
• Leaving Brazil. An international departure normally clears outbound formalities at an international airport. Some itineraries start at Congonhas, fly a short domestic hop to clear, and then continue.
• Domestic trips. No customs step is involved, which is where Congonhas is at its most efficient.

São Paulo has several airports that business jets use. The right one depends on where you are going, where you are starting from in the city, and the time of day.

Getting to Congonhas

The map above shows the drive from the city centre. The airport is in the south zone, close to the neighbourhoods of Campo Belo, Moema and Vila Mariana. From Itaim Bibi, Faria Lima or Jardins the drive is short on a clear road, but São Paulo traffic can turn a 20-minute drive into an hour at peak times, and heavy summer rain can make it worse.

Tips for the ground leg:

• Leave margin at peak hours. Weekday mornings and early evenings are the hardest. The airport's 23:00 limit makes an evening delay more costly than usual.
• Consider a helicopter. For time-critical trips, a helicopter transfer between a helipad near your office and the airport, or to Guarulhos for an international connection, is common in São Paulo. We can include it in the plan.

Light jets

A light jet seats about five to seven passengers and is well suited to São Paulo–Rio, São Paulo–Belo Horizonte or São Paulo–Curitiba. Midsize and super midsize jets

For a larger group or a longer domestic flight, such as São Paulo to Brasília, Salvador or Recife, a midsize or super midsize jet adds a stand-up cabin, more baggage room and more range. Turboprops are often the practical answer for flights to smaller airfields in the interior, to farms and agribusiness sites, or to coastal destinations with short strips. They perform well on short runways and can be more economical on short hops.

The airport itself is a small part of the price. Seasonality and busy periods

São Paulo is a business city first, and business aviation demand follows the working week. Monday mornings and Thursday or Friday evenings are busy. Beyond that:

• Summer holidays and Carnival. From late December through Carnival, typically in February or early March, many São Paulo residents head to the coast of São Paulo state, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and the islands. Demand for flights to leisure destinations rises, and aircraft availability tightens.
• Formula 1 in São Paulo. The Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, traditionally in the latter part of the year, brings extra private traffic to the city. Interlagos is in the south zone, not far from Congonhas, so expect congestion on the roads nearby over the race weekend.
