Ibiza is well served by scheduled and holiday flights in summer, and that is exactly the problem many private travellers want to avoid. On a peak Saturday the terminal handles wave after wave of holiday departures and arrivals, queues stretch through security and baggage reclaim, and the road outside is busy with coaches and taxis.

Arriving by private jet separates you from that flow. You use the airport's business aviation facilities rather than the main terminal, your bags come off the aircraft with you, and your car can be waiting close to the ramp. The month strip above divides the year into three seasons. Here is what each means for a private trip.

Summer season, June to September

This is the peak. Villas are full, the beach clubs and nightlife are at full stretch, and private traffic into IBZ is at its heaviest. Weekends in July and August are the busiest of all, especially around the start and end of the school holidays in northern Europe. If you plan to fly in this window, book early, keep your times flexible by an hour or two where you can, and expect the operator to spend some effort securing slots and parking.

The season's energy also has a rhythm of its own. Many of the large clubs traditionally open in late May or June and close in late September or early October, and those opening and closing weeks draw extra visitors. Shoulder months, May and October

May and October are the months many regular visitors prefer. The sea is warm enough in October, the island is calmer, and restaurants and hotels are open without the peak-season crowds. Slots and parking are easier to arrange, and aircraft availability across Europe is less stretched. For a relaxed family break or a villa viewing trip, these months offer most of Ibiza's appeal with far fewer constraints.

Winter, November to April

Out of season, Ibiza is a different, quieter island. Many hotels and beach clubs close, but the old town, the countryside and the walking trails remain, and the airport is much easier to use. Private arrivals in winter tend to be owners visiting their properties, buyers viewing real estate, or people looking for a peaceful escape. The weather is mild compared with northern Europe, although sea crossings to Formentera can be affected by wind.

Arriving at Ibiza Airport by private jet

Slots and parking in summer

In the peak months, private flights into IBZ need slots, and parking space for business aircraft is limited. Larger aircraft staying on the ground for more than a short turnaround may need specific parking approval, and at the busiest times that approval is not always available. The result is a common pattern: the aircraft lands, you step off, and the jet repositions empty to a nearby airport such as Palma, Valencia or Barcelona to park. It then returns to collect you for the flight home.

This drop-and-reposition pattern affects both cost and flexibility. Each empty sector adds flight time to the charter, and if you want to change your return time, the aircraft has to fly back in to meet you. Border formalities

Spain is part of the Schengen Area. If you fly into Ibiza from another Schengen country, such as France or Switzerland, there is normally no passport control on arrival, although you still carry valid identity documents. Flights from the United Kingdom or other non-Schengen countries go through border control on arrival. Choosing the aircraft for an island trip

On sectors of under two and a half hours, range is not the deciding factor for a private jet to Ibiza. The questions that matter are group size, luggage and how the aircraft fits into the island's parking constraints.

Light jets

For up to about six or seven passengers with sensible luggage, a light jet is the natural default. It is the smallest category our model shows flying every corridor into Ibiza nonstop, it keeps the estimate lower, and a smaller aircraft is often easier to fit onto a busy summer ramp. The trade-off is space: most light jets don't have a stand-up cabin, and baggage volume is limited.

Midsize and super midsize jets

Summer trips often come with more luggage than business travel: beach bags, sports kit, event outfits. A midsize or super midsize jet adds a stand-up cabin and more baggage space, and suits groups of up to about eight or nine. From London, the extra comfort on a two-hour-plus flight is noticeable.

Heavy jets and larger groups

Larger groups can fly in heavy jets, and very large parties can consider an airliner-sized aircraft arranged case by case. Bear in mind that the larger the aircraft, the harder parking can be in peak season, so repositioning is more likely. After you land: getting around the island

Ibiza is small. From the airport, most of the island is within a relatively short drive, and a car can meet you close to the aircraft.

• Ibiza Town and Dalt Vila. The capital and its fortified old town, part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture, are close to the airport. Marinas here are the base for many yacht charters.
• The south and Ses Salines. The beaches and beach clubs of the south are close to the airport, around the salt flats of the natural park.
• Santa Eulària and the east. A calmer, family-oriented area with a marina, popular with villa renters.
• Sant Antoni and the west. Known for sunset views and a livelier atmosphere in season.
• The north. Quieter countryside, agroturismo hotels and secluded villas, typically the longest drive from the airport.

Reaching Formentera

Formentera has no airport, so private travellers fly into Ibiza and continue by sea. Regular ferries run from Ibiza Town, and private boat transfers are common for guests staying on the smaller island. The crossing takes about half an hour or more, depending on the vessel and sea conditions. Island hopping
