A short history of Don Mueang

Don Mueang is one of the oldest airports in Asia. It opened as a Royal Thai Air Force base in 1914, and it served as Bangkok's main commercial airport for most of the twentieth century (Don Mueang International Airport, Wikipedia). At its peak it ranked among the busiest airports in Asia.

When Suvarnabhumi opened in September 2006, airline traffic moved there and Don Mueang closed to scheduled flights. Capacity pressures at the new airport led to Don Mueang's reopening in March 2007, and in 2012 AirAsia moved its Bangkok operations there, turning it into the city's low-cost hub. Today the airport is owned by the Royal Thai Air Force and operated by Airports of Thailand, the state airports company (Airports of Thailand, Wikipedia).

That history explains the airport's character. It has the long runways and the airside infrastructure of a former international hub, a military presence, a busy low-cost airline schedule and, alongside all of that, a separate business aviation operation.

Business aviation passengers at Don Mueang use a dedicated fixed-base operation rather than the airline terminals. The facility opened by MJets was reported at the time as Thailand's first dedicated FBO (FlightGlobal), with its own lounge, crew facilities and on-site processing for immigration and customs.
