Sacramento private jets: where and how to fly

Sacramento private jets serve a city that is easy to underestimate. As California's capital, Sacramento draws legislators, lobbyists, lawyers and state agency leaders, and its wider region is home to agriculture, healthcare, construction and a growing technology sector. Many of the people who fly privately from here are travelling on business to Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Washington or the big Texas cities. Others are heading for Lake Tahoe, the Mountain West or a family holiday. What they share is a wish to leave from an airport close to home and to fly on their own schedule.

This page explains how private flights from Sacramento work. It covers the two airports in our dataset and how to choose between them, what trips to major cities look like in our pricing model, how the Central Valley's weather affects flying, and what shapes the price. The tables above show the airports and any live empty legs; the text below adds context and judgement.

We are a charter broker. We do not own or operate aircraft; we compare what licensed operators can offer for your date, explain the trade-offs and stay with the trip until you land. You can find out more about how we work on the JetPriceCheck homepage.

Two airports for private flights in Sacramento

Sacramento has one airport built for airlines and one built for business and general aviation. Both are run by the Sacramento County Department of Airports.

Sacramento Executive Airport (SAC)

Sacramento Executive Airport is the city's business aviation airport. It sits about three miles south of downtown, in the Land Park and Freeport area, and the county describes it as Northern California's leading general aviation airport. It is one of the oldest airfields in the state: according to the county's history page, it opened in 1930 as the Sutterville Aerodrome.

Executive has no scheduled airline service. That means a quiet terminal, short walks, and a drive of around ten minutes from the Capitol and downtown offices. For a business trip that starts at the Capitol Mall, it is hard to beat. Whether a given aircraft can use Executive with your passengers, bags and fuel for the trip is a question the operator answers, and we ask it for every quote. Larger jets on long flights may prefer the longer runways at the international airport.

Sacramento International Airport (SMF)

Sacramento International Airport lies north-west of the city, near the Sacramento River and the I-5. It is the region's airline airport, with a much larger airfield. Private passengers use business aviation facilities away from the airline terminals, so you still do not walk through the public halls.

SMF can be the better choice for travellers living in Natomas, Woodland or Davis, for large aircraft on long trips, or when an aircraft's performance needs call for a longer runway. For people in the eastern suburbs, such as Folsom, El Dorado Hills or Roseville, the drive to either airport is similar, and the aircraft and timing usually decide.

Other airfields

The county also runs other airfields in the region, including a former Air Force base at Mather that handles cargo and general aviation. They can be useful in specific cases, and we will suggest one if it suits your trip, but most private flights from Sacramento start at Executive or International.

Estimated flight times and costs from Sacramento

We don't hold a curated route corridor for Sacramento yet, so the trips below have no route page of their own. They are examples from our pricing model, showing the smallest aircraft category that can fly each one nonstop in the model, an estimated flight time and a one-way estimate range. They are estimates, not quotes.

Trip from Sacramento Distance Smallest nonstop category Estimated time One-way estimate (USD)
Los Angeles 296 nm Turboprop 1 h 35 min 6,500 – 10,000
Dallas 1,245 nm Turboprop 5 h 20,000 – 32,000
Houston 1,402 nm Turboprop 5 h 35 min 22,500 – 35,500
Chicago 1,551 nm Light jet 4 h 25 min 28,000 – 42,000
Atlanta 1,811 nm Midsize jet 4 h 50 min 39,000 – 58,000
Toronto 1,909 nm Midsize jet 5 h 5 min 40,000 – 61,000

How to use these figures:

  • Los Angeles is a short, efficient trip. At about an hour and a half by turboprop in the model, it is well suited to a same-day return, with the aircraft waiting while you work.
  • Texas by turboprop is a long flight. The model's lowest-cost option for Dallas and Houston is a turboprop at five hours or more. Most travellers would rather pay more for a faster light or midsize jet.
  • Chicago is quicker than Houston because the model switches to a light jet, which flies faster, even though the distance is greater.
  • The South-East and Canada need a midsize jet to fly nonstop in the model. For Toronto, plan for Canada's entry rules on arrival and U.S. customs on the return.

Our private jet cost guide explains how hourly rates, positioning, fees and taxes turn into a charter price, and the methodology page lists the assumptions behind these estimates.

What shapes the price of a private flight from Sacramento

  1. Positioning. Sacramento has a smaller based charter fleet than Los Angeles or the Bay Area. If the aircraft for your trip must fly in empty to collect you, that time is usually charged. We look for aircraft already nearby first.
  2. Airport choice. Fees and handling differ between Executive and International, and the right airport for your aircraft can change the offer.
  3. Trip shape. For a same-day trip, keeping the aircraft waiting is often cheaper than two one-way flights. For a week away, two one-ways usually work out better.
  4. Timing. Legislative deadlines, holidays and Tahoe ski weekends all push up demand.

Weather and seasons in the Central Valley

Sacramento's weather is usually kind to flying, but two seasons need attention.

Winter fog. The Central Valley is known for dense tule fog, which forms on still, cold nights after rain and can linger well into the morning. It can reduce visibility at both Sacramento airports to the point where departures and arrivals are delayed. Operators plan for it, but if you have an early departure in December or January, keep some flexibility in your schedule.

Summer heat. Summer days in Sacramento are regularly very hot. Heat reduces aircraft performance, which can limit how much fuel and payload a jet can carry from a given runway, especially on long trips. That's one reason the operator might prefer the international airport for a heavy, long-range departure in July.

Spring and autumn are usually the easiest seasons, with clear skies and mild temperatures.

Where Sacramento travellers fly

  • Los Angeles and Southern California, for business, entertainment and family visits.
  • The Bay Area, which is a short drive but a slow one in traffic; some travellers connect onward from there.
  • Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada, a very short flight. In winter, mountain weather and snow can affect the smaller airports near the lake, so we check the options with the operator.
  • Washington, D.C. and the East Coast, for government and policy work. These trips need at least a midsize jet to fly nonstop in most cases.
  • The Mountain West, Hawaii and Mexico for leisure. Flights to Hawaii cross open ocean, so operators plan extra fuel reserves and often use larger aircraft than the distance alone suggests; each trip is checked by the operator.

Many of these destinations are served by airlines from Sacramento International, often with a connection. The case for a private flight is strongest when a connection would add hours, when the destination airport is small, or when several people are travelling together and the cost per seat comes closer to a premium airline fare.

Who charters private jets in Sacramento

  • Government, legal and policy travellers, whose schedules follow the legislative calendar and can change at short notice. Our corporate jet charter page explains how we handle recurring trips.
  • Agriculture, construction and healthcare executives visiting sites across California and neighbouring states, where a private flight can reach smaller airports close to the work.
  • Families and groups heading for the mountains or the coast; see group private jet charter and, for pet owners, pet-friendly private jets.
  • Patients and families needing a medically supported flight. We arrange these with licensed air-ambulance operators; it is not an emergency service. See medical private jet charter.

Other ways to fly privately

On-demand charter is not the only way to fly privately. Regular flyers sometimes compare it with jet cards, fractional ownership or shared semi-private flights. Our guides explain each option: jet cards, fractional jet ownership and semi-private flights. For most people flying a handful of trips a year from Sacramento, on-demand charter remains the simplest choice.

Empty legs from Sacramento

Empty legs are flights an aircraft makes anyway, usually to return to base or reposition after a one-way charter, which operators sometimes sell at a reduced price. Sacramento sees them when aircraft return south or west after dropping passengers. The table above lists any current empty legs from Sacramento, and our empty legs page has the full list. Because the date, time and airports are fixed and the flight can be withdrawn if the aircraft is sold as a full charter, empty legs suit flexible travellers.

How we arrange Sacramento private jets for you

  1. You tell us the trip: where you are starting, your destination, dates, passengers, luggage and any pets.
  2. We choose the airport: Executive or International, depending on the aircraft, the trip length and where you are coming from.
  3. We present a short list: two or three aircraft with estimated times and prices and the trade-offs explained plainly.
  4. You confirm, and the operator flies: the operating carrier is named on your confirmation and is responsible for the flight. We stay in touch until you land.

To compare aircraft categories before you book, see the aircraft guide.

Planning checklist for Sacramento private jets

  • Start with where you are really leaving from: downtown and the southern neighbourhoods point to Executive, the north-west and Davis to International.
  • On winter mornings, allow for tule fog and keep an hour or two of flexibility.
  • In summer, tell us the full passenger and baggage load early, since heat can limit what an aircraft carries.
  • For a same-day trip to Los Angeles or the Bay Area, ask for a return with the aircraft waiting.
  • On flights of four hours or more, compare a turboprop with a light or midsize jet on comfort as well as price.
  • For international trips, check that every passenger's passport and any visas are valid for the whole journey.
  • Book early around ski weekends, holidays and the end of the legislative session.

How much does it cost to charter a private jet from Sacramento?

In our pricing model, Sacramento to Los Angeles by turboprop is estimated at 6,500 to 10,000 USD one way, and Sacramento to Chicago by light jet at 28,000 to 42,000 USD one way. These are estimates, not quotes; the price for your date depends on available aircraft, positioning and fees.

Which airport do private jets use in Sacramento?

Many use Sacramento Executive Airport, a general aviation airport about three miles south of downtown. Larger aircraft and long trips may use Sacramento International Airport.

How much is a 2 hour private jet flight?

It depends on the aircraft category and positioning. As an example from our model, Sacramento to Los Angeles, about an hour and a half by turboprop, is estimated at 6,500 to 10,000 USD one way. Our cost guide explains the hourly rates behind these figures.

Does fog affect private flights from Sacramento?

It can. Winter tule fog in the Central Valley sometimes delays early departures. Operators plan for it, and we recommend keeping some flexibility for winter mornings.

Do you still go through TSA on a private jet?

Not at an airline checkpoint. On a private charter from a business aviation facility, the operator and crew check identities and baggage. Passengers still need valid ID, and passports for international trips.
