In exchange, Luton has a very large business aviation community, which usually means plenty of aircraft based there or passing through. This is often the deciding factor, and it is where the two airports differ most for passengers.

Farnborough operates within set opening hours and an annual limit on movements agreed with the local planning authority. According to the airport's own planning information, it is open from early morning until late evening on weekdays, with shorter hours at weekends and on bank holidays. Weekend movements are capped separately, and the airport has applied to raise that weekend cap. Within those hours there is no airline schedule to compete with, but very early or very late departures are simply not available. Luton is slot-coordinated, which means business aviation flights need an allocated slot, and enforcement has become stricter, according to trip-support specialist Universal Weather. In recent summers, Luton and Stansted have also restricted ad hoc business aviation movements at night, according to Aviation International News.
